lists, rambles, and a discourse
Things that annoy me:
a) I keep second-guessing myself on tests and quizzes, and when I get them back, those were the answers I have originally!
b) People who don’t signal to change lanes!
c) I just studied for a certain section in the chapter, and it turns out that it’s not even on the chemistry quiz today!! Don’t you just hate that?
Things that are amusing me at the moment:
a) I just cooked eggs for lunch, and they’re shaped like fish!
b) I’m working on another haiku, and I think it’s very pretty.
c) I enjoyed bio class today, and the prof was telling us of a very amusing story when she was growing up in ---I forgot which state.
We were talking about behavioral isolation, and how that relates to the origin of species and evolution. Anyway, when the prof was growing up, she was living on a farm. So she was cleaning out one of the shacks on the farm, and there was this baby sparrow all alone without a mother.
So she fed that baby sparrow every 2 hours and took care of it until it matured and knew how to fly. She wanted the baby sparrow to live out in the wild, so she let it go. But simultaneously, the sparrow wasn’t a wild sparrow; it grew up with a parakeet, because the prof also kept a parakeet. And so the sparrow was not a wild sparrow, but a housed sparrow. Instead of developing regional or local bird songs of a sparrow, that “baby” sparrow sang bird songs of a parakeet!
So you can imagine the prof’s surprise when a flock of sparrows huddling around at the backyard! Because that “baby” sparrow must have attracted a parakeet or some bird and have eventually mated. It turned out later that that flock of matured sparrows all sounded like parakeets!!
Now that would be very strange if that “baby” sparrow would try to attract a real normal female sparrow. That normal female sparrow would’ve thought that that “baby” sparrow is strange. So in a sense, that “baby” sparrow would be shunned by the sparrow world. On the other hand, that “baby” sparrow had attracted a bird, despite its only flaw of learning the wrong bird song.
Well, it’s definitely a strange surprise though! That certain offspring would produce sparrows who sound like parakeets! Imagine how this would affect evolution!
And with this example, this illustrates the concept of behavioral isolation. The behavior (in this case, the bird calling/bird songs) of that “baby” sparrow is “isolated” from its real normal behavior of a true sparrow, that is, sounding like a real sparrow...
Anyway, I'm just glad that the week is over, but apparently, I have enough homework to do this whole weekend. I'm tired, but yet restless at the same time.
And I'm just glad it's Friday!!
And I just thought of something:
Sometimes, it's kinda weird... But when one does not have the heart to spill all of one's personal problems to a friend whom one might know for years, it's a rather difficult situation. Instead, one tells everything or almost everything to a totally complete stranger---or to a person whom one doesn't know that well.
I find it strange and yet, comforting. I don't know what it is with human nature, but is it because we fear of judgement or discrimination of some sort? Or are we afraid that the friend who's listening to us might think we're a bad person?
I'm neutral. At times, I'm afraid that the friend might think I'm just into life---that I take things too seriously, that I need to lighten up. Yes, this is part of the judgement. And other times, I just need to spill out everything, just to get things off my chest, instead of carrying the burden all by myself. And this is where the therapy comes in: The friend who listens gains more understanding of human nature than a friend who doesn't... Sounds pretty much logical, doesn't it? It makes sense, but sometimes, some people are stubborn---sometimes, they just won't share any of their problems with anyone.
And I think in some ways, that's kinda sad. People means interaction. People means communication. I don't think anyone can go on in life without having any interaction whatsoever with anyone...
Well, I think I'll stop here for now. If I don't post for a while. It's because I'm busy with school! Until later, mes amis!! I promise I'll amuse you with many miscellaneous things later!!
